Project Description

Purple-throated  humming bird

This purple-throated humming bird’s full name is Purple-Throated Carib. Native to the Caribbean, it is seen on many of the islands, including Antigua. Humming birds number among the world’s smallest birds. They are also unique as they can fly both forwards & backwards. Their name comes from the noise made when they flap their wings so fast.

The colors are caused by their iridescent feathers but they can also hide them if need be. They hover to feed from nectar in flowers or feeders, using a long tongue to suck the nectar up.
