The challenge was to paint a symmetric banana palm in an asymmetric composition and using colors not necessarily associated with banana palm leaves. The yellows and greens and browns are typical but the reds and pinks and purple are more often seen in the banana fruits and flowers. The incorporation of liquid acrylic house paint to achieve the signatory drip effects using gravity (tipping the wood at different angles) produced an interesting result. The finished painting is almost completely abstract. Knowing the title, however, encourages a closer look which then reveals the form of the banana palm. The surface of the primed wood also produces interesting textures and patterns, using heavy body acrylic paint in some places and the same but heavily diluted in others.
