This typical Antiguan landscape shows a row of coconut palms fringing a white sandy beach with a sparking turquoise sea in the distance. In the foreground is a pond, in deeper hues of ultramarine, with reeds and swaying grasses reflected in it. The yellows and burnt sienna of the vegetation contrast beautifully with the aqua blue tones of the water.
The almost white heat of the sun is felt in this quite stunning watercolor inspired by a small island off Antigua’s north shore called Long Island, with its exclusive and prestigious resort of Jumby Bay. (I remember first visiting this island in 1981 when there was absolutely nothing on it – just a wonderful long white sand beach where we would go by boat on Sundays…).
This Antiguan landscape is very peaceful and the watercolor is soothing and easy to live with. The colors don’t shriek and yet this is obviously a tropical landscape, maybe in the Caribbean…
